Adding colour to your space can be somewhat daunting we you have a blank canvas or feel overwhelmed on where to start. We chatted to our designers at Hemma Home, to get her expert advice on how to add colour to your space.
1. Begin with a Neutral Base
Start by grounding your space with neutral tones—soft whites, sandy beiges, warm greys. This creates a calm and timeless backdrop that allows colour to shine through your decor without clashing or feeling chaotic. It’s also a great way to reflect natural light and open up your space.
2. Add Colour Through Decor
Once your base is set, layer in colour with accessories like ceramic vases, textured cushions, patterned rugs, or bold lighting pieces. Look for tones inspired by nature—terracotta, olive green, dusty blue, mustard, or soft clay. These accents add personality without needing to repaint walls or buy new furniture.
Explore our range of handcrafted decor, from Mediterranean-style cookware to European-inspired textiles, to find pieces that pop in just the right way.
3. Choose a Simple Colour Palette
Pick two to four colours that work well together and stick with them throughout your space. Repeating these shades in different materials—like fabric, metal, or ceramic—makes your home feel cohesive and polished. Think: blush cushions, gold lamp bases, and warm-toned art.
4. Don’t Forget the Lighting
Lighting changes how colour looks. Natural sunlight can make tones feel lighter and softer, while artificial lighting can warm or cool a space. Try testing your colour pieces at different times of the day to see what works best.
Pair your coloured pieces with warm table lamps, glass candleholders, or soft pendant lights to bring depth and mood to your space.

5. Start Small and Build Up
If you're not sure where to begin, start with one or two pieces—like a decorative bowl, bookend, or incense holder. As your confidence grows, you can build up to adding statement lighting, curtains, or textured wall art in your chosen colours.
